Wow Bart,

You did a really nice job on both the canoe and your webpage. They both look really really good.

One word of advice: be sure and measure that window before you start your next boat project this winter.

-Zane
Give a man a fish, feed him a meal.
Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat all day and drink beer.

Thanx guys, you really make me blush (and this time it´s not the epoxy blushing).

I´m just an amateur in both boat and website building, but I´m some what of a perfectionist too.
Yes, I´m going to measure that window for sure before I start building my FL11. It should give me room for 160 cm (5´, 3"). I would like to build the new cat boot, but that´s just a tiny little bit too beamy.

And Steve: no woman, no cry....
(I´ve cleaned up the sanddust myself allready).

Looking forward to your pictures,

Bart ;

Just to reveal some of my secrets:

First, there is a Dutch saying: ´Een goede voorbereiding is het halve werk´ (try translating that one).

Second, I deliberately didn´t use woodflour as a filler for my fillets. I saw several websites from other builders before starting and it struck me that woodflour thickened epoxy gives ugly stains on the plywood when spoiled. I used colloidal silica instead, it is off-white and gives a milky, semi-transparent look. Small spots of spoiled epoxy/filler mix stay transparent and you won´t find them back after coating and (clear) painting. I think woodflour will only work if it´s just the same sort of wood as your plywood. I tried mixing some okoume sawdust (from my jigsaw) thru the epoxy as a filler, but that didn´t work: far too coarse. It has to be really fine, like powder or flour.

The silica is funny stuff: extremely light (a box of approx. 1 liter weighs only 60 grams). It has to be mixed very carefully through your epoxy to get the right consistency. The first time I mixed it, it took me so long that the batch got so hot that it started smoking... Within 2 minutes it left me with a lump of hot, smoking, cured epoxy in my mixing cup.

I think that´s called Learning By Mistakes... As you can see I finally got the hang of it though.
Maybe Jacques would better put some other filler in his S3 kits instead of woodflour?

Regards,
Bart
