Custom trailer question

I started building a low sheer fs17 two years ago, had to take an extended break, but now ready to pick up the build again. I've relocated to houston and want to move the boat here from north Louisiana. My plan is to have a custom aluminum trailer built.

My question is will a few pics and the build plans be sufficient info for a custom trailer to be built? Or do they need the actual hull present?

Also, does around $2k-2.5 sound right for a trailer of this size?

I've spoken with McClain in Houston and Coastline in Seadrift for my FS18. Price about $2800 for aluminum trailer depending on lights and wheels ( galvanized vs Aluminum). I think McClain might do all galvanized for a little less. The trailer's are custom. I understand you can order with drawings, both require you bring hull to shop for fitting of beds. You can then leave with trailer and boat. Approximately 6 week lead time, half down with order.

I'm probably going to use Coastline with a July delivery. Hope this helps.

Yea I'm considering both, leaning toward coastline but haven't heard back from them yet... The only problem is my hull is about 7.5 hours northeast of houston. That's a long drive with it on a cradle and flatbed.

You know... I think I've seen other builders just winch the boat from the cradle and onto the new trailer. I believe someone used like Pledge or something like that to lubricate the new bunk carpet so it would just slide on fairly easily.

LSUred, you should check out flyfishingmonk's PH18 thread. He got a custom trailer from TexAll in Conroe, TX. By my assessment Ty at TexAll has a great reputation for great trailers. I live close to TexAll and met ffmonk there when he was getting a trailer made to fit his hull. It's likely where I will get a trailer for my PH18 (only have pieces cut out at this point). Conroe should be fairly convenient for you to get to. I don't recall the exact price but think it's in the same ballpark as above. If you do some searching through the TTMB and Boating forums at 2coolfishing.com you can find lots of praise for these trailers and Ty's customer service. Warning: since you're moving to Houston the 2cool website will probably become a daily stop for you.

I had mine custom built for my OB19 #2200 but with adjustable bunks. Sent them length from bow eye to bottom of stern and max beam at chine.

Adjustable bunks sound like a pretty good plan. Also, does anyone see a problem with doing some boat building in a boat storage facility?? Besides obvious pains like bad lighting and one electrical outlet, is it illegal or anything? I don't have a lot of pieces to cut out anymore, just gunnels and center console...so mostly just gluing, sanding and fitting.

As long as the owners of the place don't mind I see no issue with it. I have been following a very nice build on another forum where the guy is building an 18' tugboat in a storage unit

I couldn't find a storage facility that would let me build my boat in it, so I got a place with a garage. Most storage facilities will not let you do it, the main reason is liability. At least that's my experience here....Houston might be different.

Yea I'm a little worried about finding a place. I don't know whether I should ask permission upfront or ask forgiveness. If I can't find one that will allow boat building/modification, I'm SOL.
