Shelf Life of System Three Paint & Tinting

Post by JLL »

I have several cans of System Three two part paint and a can of S3 primer that are about five years old. They are about half used and have mostly been kept inside except for about a year and a half in the garage. Are they still good to use?

Also, one of the cans of S3 paint is white and I want to tint it to ivory. Can I carry the paint to my local paint store and get them to do it with no adverse consequences to the paint?

Thanks for any help.

JLL

The paint will be OK unless it froze. Bring it to a paint shop and have them shake the cans.
The primer is almost certainly hard like a rock . . .

I had a hardware store *shake up* my one year old S3 primer. It wasn't enough to fully loosen and mix the settled pigment. 1/4 inch was still like a rock in the bottom of the can, but the S3 folks said it should be fine.

This *mixer* was one of the slower spin and twist mixers. I think one of the older *vibrate the thing to pieces* mixers would have done the job better, but these newer ones likely do a better blend of all the contents if they are already loosely soluable.

sincerely,
ks

Thanks for the information ks. I think Jacques is right about my can of primer. It's five years old and would be better off as an anchor. Besides, after all this work it would be rediculous to try and save a few bucks on an old can of primer.

Thanks,

jll
