OB15 Transom Cutting

Post by Plugger »

I just purchased a ´94 - 25HP Johnson Tiller Outboard Long Shaft (20"). My question is will the transom have to be cut so that the cavitation plate will meet the bottom of the boat or will it be okay the way it is? I really don´t want to have to cut the transom if I can help it.

Did you cut it per plans? The plans are for a 15 inch shaft. Hope you haven´t cut it yet.

For fine adjustment you can just mount the engine in the second set of holes on the bracket. But obviously this can not be used to compensate
for the +5 inches needed if you cut it per plans.

Maybe you can take the engine back, and get a 15 inch shaft engine.

Christian
I haven´t cut it yet. I guess I will measure the 20" and cut the transom to fit the motor. There is no second hole on this size motor. It clamps to the transom.

The OB15 can take a 15 or a 20" shaft. The transom cut we show is for a 15" shaft but it is just a matter of cutting that clamping board 5" higher.
If you measure, you´ll see it is 15.

So due to the angle of the transom, its 5 1/2 inch higher (I made that mistake)

Christian
You could convert the Johnson OB to
a "regular shaft" length engine - possibly
by removing engine´s spacer section &
installing a regular-length "drive shaft".

You´d need to check with an OB dealer,
for parts, etc. I know you can
easily go the other way, short to long -
by buying the spacer and extra long
drive shaft. (and a gasket set)

.....displaced powerboater
