VG 20 BOM List

Post by Jib »

Jacques, very excited that I received my plans today. Took only 8 days from mailing of cheque to arrival of plans in Sydney. They look great.
Need help on the BOM. Not clear about the following details. Could you spell it out for me please.
Jeff

Edited by jacques:
I deleted most of this thread: if I don’t understand myself what’s going on, how will a builder understand it?

[ This message was edited by: jacquesmm on 30-08-2002 14:31 ]

VG 20 BOM List

Post by jacquesmm »

I´ll review the questions one by one:

BOM, plywood:
============
The building notes state that there are two options for the materials, see bottom of second page. Option one uses thicker plywood (9 mm) for the sides, option two use thinner plywood (6 mm) sandwiched between layers of fiberglass.

Option two is the way to go: stronger, lighter easier but we left option one in there because in some countries the cost of glass and resin is prohibitive. Let´s forget that version in your case.

Last pages of the building notes says that for option two, one must replace all 9 mm for sides and deck with 6 mm sandwiched etc.

Look at your BOM: replace and you get the same BOM than what is listed at the web site.

BOM resin and glass:

---------

It is correct for each version. The one at the web site is also correct: it may be easier to read.

Fiberglass type.

-----

See the fiberglass update sheet attached to the notes: availability varies with countries. What we specify is biaxial 12 oz (+ or - 400 gr) because that is the lightest one available in the US but 9 oz. ( 300 gr) is ideal if you can find it.

The length of the tape is on your BOM and also listed at the web site: no need to calculate anything.

Fillers should be purchased by volume: one liter of wood flour is 20 times heavier than one liter of microballoons! Get around 50 liters, it is cheap.

Fiberglass expressed as area:

---

We give the area because the width of fabric rolls varies: 80 cm? 125 cm? 150 cm? The area is always correct, the length depends on the width of the roll.

Again, you can look at the nesting drawing and see the exact shape of the panels that must be covered, it should be easy to estimate the length that way. Don´t forget the overlaps.

Or then check our kit: we calculated it with a 50" (125 cm) roll.

We must have around 12 pages in an Excel spreadsheet for that boat´s BOM: every inch was counted.

Despite that, BOM´s are estimates. Some builders are going to recycle all the small cuts of glass and use less resin, others want to cover everything with a full length of fabric without any wrinkles or seams. Then, there are options on the plans and builders customize their boats. We estimate the best we can for an average builder but don´t expect it to be perfect.

[ This message was edited by: jacquesmm on 30-08-2002 21:52 ]

VG 20 BOM List

Jacques, many thanks for the reply.
I will order the ply as per the Web BOM. On the epoxy I will order total 60 ltrs MIXED equivalent, resin & hardener.

On the BOM received, if you change the 5 sheets of Side planking & the 2 sheets for Decking to 6mm and then add up the rest of the 6mm listed, you get 17.5 sheets of 6mm.
This leaves 2.5 sheets short to get to the 20 6mm sheets listed on the web site.

My confusion would appear to be caused by the cockpit sides & inside faces (inside faces of ?) as listed under the 9 mm. Therefore I guess some of these 9mm sheets must also change to 6mm to get to the total 20 sheets.

....

The cockpit should be 9 mm. See Justin Pipkorn´s web site about that, he comments on the cockpit.
