FS18 Oops

Post by vgant »

Due to weddings, work, illness in the family etc. I haven’t been able to even work slowly on the boat for some months. In May I fitted the sole and glassed the bottom surface of both pieces ready to install.
My problem is that the small forward piece of the sole developed a slight curvature from side to side with a slight crown over the months. I decided to use half inch self-tapping screws to hold down until epoxy set. I believe this would have worked had I not been in too much of a hurry to remove the screws. I had put them in about 3pm and removed them 6 hours later, thinking the epoxy was set enough to hold the plywood down, I was concerned that screws would be too hard remove overnight.
I was wrong. In the morning I found a 3/16 in gap at the center and about 1/8 in gap at the side. There are set epoxy “pillars” where epoxy set as the plywood went up. The front edge is in the right position and all epoxy well set, the piece is very stiff just slightly crowned.
I see two options neither of which I like:
A. Cut at least half the piece out and redo.
B. Place shims, so that the larger sole piece is even with the crown of the forward piece and fill voids with thickened epoxy. I think this would have adequate strength but not sure and the sole would a slight but probably noticeable crown.
Thoughts and suggestions, please!

I would like to see a picture but gaps are not a problem. A tight fit between parts is not required, quite the opposite.
What is important is fairness, hull shape and that is hwy I would like to see a picture of what you describe.
