28 BERTRAM OUTBOARD CONVERSION

Well, 15 years ago I bought a 28 Bertram that was a hard luck case. Actually long before I ever was lucky enough to find this forum and material supply source. I re did it and it came to be this



We used it for 9 or ten years and I finally got tired of running 20 mph and having to pay to keep this beast in the water and have the bottom cleaned. After pouring tons of money in and getting only a portion of it back I swore never again. Then I saw a recent conversion to outboards that was really fantastic.


Her is one that was built/converted by OMC way back in 78 right after delivery



At the same time my neighbor decided to repower his 33 contender and offered me his 250 yamahas. I also now have a place to keep it so things are a little different, at least that is what I am telling myself! Well here is the $700 new Bertram 28 ready to go under the scalple.

I've fished a lot out of the 31 and 28 Bertram's. The 28 was my favorite, such a solid ride and extra beam. I think your really on to something here.

Should be cool. I am thinking center console that you go down inside and have an extended seat in front that creates additional space underneath. Hybrid fish around center console. I cut more out last night. Hope to get most demo in luring hard top done this week end. Trip to dump in my near future! You could see that the gelcoat in the tank was damaged and flakey. This thing looks like it has been high and dry for a long time but must of had ethanol in it. Maybe not

Did some demo work today. Got the tank completely out, took the inner engine beds out as well. This thing is huge!




Also got the windows out.

Figuring out my sole height and layout. The original height was governed by the mufflers I assume as it always is at least 6" above the water line. How high above the waterline do you think I should plan it Joel? I calculated that based on the displacement she settles 1" per 1000lbs of load. Looking at the boat above the sole is 9" above the water based on the chine is just in the water in the rear. What do you think?

not an easy one to figure out exactly unless you draw it out and do hydrostatics, then you can run all sort of weight/trim what ifs.

I would make a spread sheet on weights and their locations (centers) in 3 planes, you can later balance the trim with this. Z any Y are not important unless your going to do roll/stability calculations (which I do not see much reason to do in this case)

You can compare the stock numbers with what you take out and put back in to get a good guess on final displacement

How high above the waterline do you think I should plan it Joel?

I would try to get a very good estimate of your new DWL. Sole height should be at least a few inches about that. A lot depends how you drain the cockpit, use of flappers on scuppers, etc. 6" would be a lot, but its a compromise with cockpit depth.
