Repair old cedar strip canoe
I recently bought a 60 year old 15' cedar strip canoe with a cane seat. It's in very good condition but the fiberglass coating on the hull has lifted and split in a couple of spots.Obviously the wood got wet. It's not rotted, soft or weak, just darker than the sealed parts. A 2" by 6" piece of glass is missing in one area. I'm looking for information on how to properly repair/restore it before using it. I'll also need to finish/refinish the gunnels and seat.

Can you post some pictures of it? That would help a lot. Fiberglass wasn't invented 60 years ago so if it's got glass on it, it was a later addition.

Thanks, that makes sense. It definitely is fiberglass cloth. I believe it is a very old handmade canoe. I'll get pictures this weekend. Now I'm thinking maybe I should take all the fiberglass off.

Yes. We should look at the pictures but it is probably a strip hull that was fiberglassed later.
It's probably going to require peeling the glass and go over it with new glass in epoxy this time.
