S3 Primer and EMC

I'm getting close to priming and painting my little PY12 guy and have ordered EMC base, brushing reducer, and activator. Since I have left over S3 primer from my previous build, I will use it initially. I know C. Larry added a coat of EMC primer to it to be safe but I'm checking in here so see if anyone's laid the EMC directly over the S3, or what folks think about that. I'll order the EMC primer if necessary, but it seems a waste to buy so much for one coat on a little 12' plyack topsides. What do folks say?

It worked fine for me.

Doug, I think it will be fine. I just couldn't afford to take a chance that it wasn't on Rogerdogs boat. If it was my boat I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

I used EMC over S3 primer on my NV hull . I also used EMC over there primer on the inside of the cockpit
and the pilothouse. I know Joel used it over S3 on some of his projects . I like the S3 primer better, easyer
to work with and i think its higher build per coat.

I agree. And the EMC primer is some noxious stuff :!: Made me sick for 2 days.

We have used the System Three primer with many different paints and there never was a compatibility problem.
It is an epoxy primer, much easier to apply than solvent based primers.

OK, thanks a bunch. It's just a little 12' kayak on the topsides, so if it did eventually fail, no big problem. I want to try the EMC to see how it holds up, touches up, and buffs up on this little guy. He's gonna get knocked around. BTW, I just got in from laying out the glass on the deck, cut to fit and hope to laminate it tomorrow after work. Then fair, prime, and paint. I'm pushing to finish for the Port Aransas Texas boat show. Any tips on using the EMC are appreciated.

Still on it Dougster

The EMC is easy to use.
Don''t forget the induction time = let it sit for a while after mixing.
After that, it's roll and tip as for other paints.

It is easy to use, just follow the directions on the can. Unlike Sterling, EMC actually puts directions on the can :D Use the full recommended amount of reducer, if you thin it less it will make a slight orange peel. That's 2 parts of base, 1 part of activator and 1 part reducer.

The paint is very thin, viscosity is about like milk. Apply it in thin multiple coats, expect to use 3-5 coats. Tipping really isn't necessary, but won't hurt. Foam roller and foam brush. I've also sprayed it with a Prevail disposable sprayer with very good results.

I'll let you know if it repairs as advertised. I've got Rogerdog's boat here to fix a few boo-boos and am doing some paint repair today with it. Weather permitting. If it ever quits raining. Rained every day for a month. :|

Thanks Larry.
The reminder about how thin the paint is important: go for many thin coats and it goes a long way.
