Woods Designs at the 2 day Edensaw Challenge

Post by Woods Designs »

So we had a long first day building our 14ft Zest plywood racing dinghy at Edensaw Challenge, an important part of the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival.

The build started at 9am, I hoped to finish Fridays jobs by 6pm so I could go to the Race to Alaska presentation (I raced in it this year). But it was not to be. We made a few mistakes that cost us time to make, and then correct. So we actually stopped work at 7.30pm. Other teams carried on until the stop time of 11pm

But, starting from scratch, we now have the bulkheads in, the hull bottom and hull sides all glassed together and the daggerboard box fitted. So we have a watertight boat that could be launched and paddled tomorrow morning

Today we fit the gunwales, cockpit and foredeck. Sunday is the deck gear and sailing
The video from the first day is here

I really love this stuff, thanks for posting. :D For some reason I thought this was just kids. Lots of gray hairs in view; apparently not kids. We have an event like this in San Francisco Bay. A whole lot of bailing on race day.

That boat with the twig and canvas construction is not going to track very well. I think you'll do a horizon job on him.

So we won the competition (and USD1500). More later, I feel really shattered after a stressful build and even more stressful sail in very tricky conditions. So - more later

Congratulations and I guess condolences are in order? Sorry to hear about the stress. That wasn't the idea, methinks. Very interested in your report so I'll be awaiting further details.

If anybody is interested, I would cut a kit for it.

Here is a video taken by Mike Scott as I left the marina a couple of minutes after launching the boat for the first time. The stressful/tricky bit was launching - and then sailing through the marina, the festival and past 300 expensive boats. The entrance was easy (and much wider!!)

The boat was just 5 sheets of plywood 2 days earlier.. But we did have the panels all premarked by cnc router (only we used a pencil not a cutting bit). It all went together easily, so no problem for kit builds

As soon as the plans are finalized, I will list them. I will also propose a CNC kit.
