Gheenoe Highsider Rebuild

Questions about boat repairs with our resins and fiberglass: hull patches, transoms and stringers, foam, rot etc.

Making a little progress. The rear deck is glued down, rear hatch framed out, the grab bar is mounted on the centerbox and a little fairing here and there.

Gary what lamination schedule did you use for your grab rail ? Was it glass , carbon , glass ?
When you attached it the box did you just glue and use big fillets ? The boat is coming out
real nice , makes me want to build a SC 16 .

Hi,
I love your perfect progress, your boat is really looking nice. I am also interested how exactly you made the grab rail because I want to make one on my FS13 build and am keen to learn more about fibreglass and carbon sleeves, even that I made already 2 spars that turned out ok, but I dont know if I did everything right cause I just worked according to my gutfeel.
Greetings from Karl ( Austria )

I used 6 layers of fg sock followed by 2 layers of CF. I just glued it on the box, I have not even filleted in yet and it is rock solid. I went too light on the one for my GF16, it was 4 layers of 50/50 carbon/glass sock, not stiff enough for me.

Karl I just winged it both times. If your spars turned out good, I would stick with that method.

I keep looking at that grab bar and I am jealous! :D
You did a better job than I did. The only way I can get such a smooth finish is using a PVC pipe as a mold and foam as a mandrel.
Do you have any tips and pictures you can share?

Haha, Thanks :!:

I used pipe insulation foam for this one and I used pvc for the tiller extension. I laid out the hoop on a piece of plywood, used packing tape on deck screws to hold the foam in position while the first two layers cured. I put two layers on the foam and wet them both out together. Each succeeding layer was also two at a time. Finished it up with a couple of coats of neat epoxy. Thats about it really. :D

I assume the foam stays in the hand rail or is there a trick to remove the foam after it cures?

That looks really neat!

Very cool, looks almost exactly like the way we did the grab rail for our FS13 prototype.

Nice, thank you. Much cleaner work than mine

Yes, the foam stays in there but years ago, I made a small mast that way and removed the foam with acetone. It melts in a few seconds but you better rinse the inside fast.
I wanted to run wires inside the mast but in general, it is preferable to leave the foam in, it absorbs sound, insulate.
