Awoke in Shute harbour this morning to a stunning sunny day, a steady 20 knot wind from the SE, and a forecast of NE to northerlies by mid afternoon.

Grabbed the opportunity for a sparkling shy-reach to Whitsunday Island's Dugong Inlet (Lat 20.14.47 S, Lng 148.56.80 E) under a second-reefed main and inner head sail. The child bride loved the 6-7 knot sail with decks nearly horizontal. :D

Dugong Inlet is centre-left in the pic below.

Are there still Dugongs there? I saw one in the Kapuas River in Borneo in 1991. I thought our Manatees were big!!

Yep, still here. They're now protected around Australia's coastline. We see more now than we did forty years ago. :D

Ha, there is no way the child bride likes sailing rail down. Yesterday the decks were near horizontal, not near vertical.

Interesting last couple of days.

Calm weather pierced by severe lightning and thunderstorms day and night, requiring rapid anchorage changes. Grabbing sleep as required, alternatively reading and cleaning bilges (the next chore on the long 'to do' list, part and parcel of the cruising way of life). Hunkered down in Hooks Island's Marcona Inlet at the moment.

Looking forward to sailing in fair winds under clear blue skies again soon. :D

How does one read a bilge?

Thunderstorms at night are always so much fun while out on a boat or beach camping with a boat anchored just off shore... :help: I still get the heeby jeebies thinking about a 3am event while camping on Cape Sable. Calm seas and crystal clear sky when we hit the tents at around 10pm only to be woken by a 30 knot wind and 3-4 foot breakers on the beach - none of which was predicted. Watched the Dory actually go air born a few times between the waves. Fortunately the anchor held, but ruined a good sleep for sure and damaged the graphite on the bottom just below the bow where the boat was digging in as it slammed down between the waves. Many a camper has lost their anchor there and ended up with a boat on the beach being filled with water and sand and no way to move it.

Hope you get the clear skies and steady winds you are hoping for.

Glad to hear that you are "hunkered" down Michael! So many people these days seem to make the mistake of "bunkering" down - that just isn't as effective!
