Starting a thread to help motivate me to start building. Picked up 6 sheets of 4mm Okume 1088 at Bateau Monday afternoon. The plan is to build a Swift Canoe 16 for a 2 hp Yamaha outboard I have. The criteria are to get it in the water for less than $1,000 and no heavier than 100 lbs. Need to be able to carry it on top of a vehicle. Going to be some "modifications" required as Jacque's plans come in at 175lb. My previous boat was 1/3 heavier than his plans, so I will be challenged to bring her in at almost 50% lighter! Oh yeah...it needs to be unsinkable too!

Following this, I was looking to do the same and about to pull the trigger when the FS13 and XL model came out, now I'm stuck again.

Nice! You probably already looked into the foam core option for weight. I imagine that would break your budget of less than 1k. It's a tall order but I bet it can be done I made my epoxy stretch really far using poor man's peel ply, not sure if you've given that a try yet. I'll be watching

I proposed foam or honeycomb for all flat parts but that conflicts with the budget.

The FS13 and XL look like a LOT of fun, but I need something to haul two men and some gear 14 miles along the coast for my annual camping trip on Cape Sable. Oh yeah...it also has to move with a 2hp outboard. The foam is not out of the question, as budgets can always change My plan is to start with the basic hull as light as possible and then see what I need to do to make it stiff enough to be safe. The plans call for seats that serve as frames glued to the sides and floor, and a deck in the bow. I am thinking I might be able to get her stiff enough with a inwale and gunwale like on my canoes, cross members and hanging seats.

The peel ply is definitely something I am looking at, and limiting the glass to the outside. This thing will not be used like my OD18, and while I might get her to plane with just me and a cooler I doubt the 2hp will do it with two men and gear. So how stiff and strong does it need to be to move along at 4kts along the coast?

May start cutting some wood this weekend. Don't tell the wife, as she's convinced I will redo the kitchen first

My goal for a SC16 would be 125 lbs and being able to plane with 2 men and gear, which a well-tuned 6-8hp motor should do. I posted a question about the canoe style boxed gunwhales and Jacques had a better idea of using foam pipe insulation as the gunwhale and then glassing over that.

My only concerns were larger waves coming over the side in coastal areas, it's not a rough water boat but I would like to be able to run out of the mouth of a river and there are boat wakes everywhere. The second thing was enough stability for two guys to stand up and fish out of it.

Looking at the plans and pictures it is a much bigger boat than my strip canoes, which two guys can stand in. Now of course that depends on the two guys and how much beer is missing from the cooler....
