Why was it a mistake?
Because one of them was bloody lovely.

Lighter than my ickle boat but three feet longer and a foot wider.
Stable as a stable thing with stabilisers.
Tracks beautifully, but when edged will spin like a top.
Pretty too.

It was the burgundy Novacraft Prospector.

Just shy of £2k here though ($2,665)

I don’t know. There’s something about the art of watercraft that is lost with these new molded boats. Not a “soul” thing but a connectedness. It that’s my personal feeling.
My already completed 'Lil Bit'. A Martens Goosen V12 set up to sail me to the fishing holes.
Currently working on making a Helms 24 our coastal cruiser.

I understand what you're saying but from a purely practical point of view, they are just more versatile. Don't get me wrong, I love my ickle boat and I would happily build and own maybe a cedar strip or cedar and canvas canoe.

I did put my little boat to good use on Sunday by squeezing through a fallen tree and scurrying about with a saw and ropes so we could clear a log-jam.
(I think one of the other chaps took some photos so I'll post them here when I can)
