well, I got off on the wrong foot when I disregarded everyones advise and used exterior plywood for the sides......and also went to 3/8" instead of 1/4....and then decided to use 3/4 marine on the bottom for oyster shell interactions.
I unknowingly make a tragic error by taking the shipyard guys advice that the epoxy was 3:1 instead of reading the directions. it was 2:1, and the result was that the boat joint separated when I bent it up for the lacing. This was my attempt to fixing in place. Little did I realize that I would be fighting that decision for the rest of the build.

I should have re-cut, but I would have lost interest in the build by going backwards, so I plowed ahead.

glued and taped. one side sheared up pretty as you please, the other side looks like a hunchback. All the pics from now on will be portside.

then after almost smooshing one of my kids on the flip, I really went off the reservation. Sorry Jacques, I've mangled your design

I missed the nesting and shorted the front piece. used 3/4" scrap for buttblock, and then realized there were places for water to pool, so ended up epoxing the whole thing. That locker is stout!

at this point I don't even know where the drawings are, I'm reacting to poor building and listening to basketball games.
I kept the rear bench open. battery will go in left cubby, bucket/ice chest slides into right. fire ext. mount and slight amount of foam will go in middle supports. Trimmed the seat edge with 2"X3/4" strip.

sand, sand, sand. stuck in wire chase and ran first ply of rubrail on the problem side. the first one broke when I tried to horse it around, so I used clamps and slowly tightened over a couple days. we'll see if it springs when I de-clamp.

You mite what to check with the designer on leaving the back deck open there might not be enough support for the transom.
Easier to fix now than later.

Thanks for that remark Topwater.

You can't leave the back open!
The transom needs some bracing. The original design includes two longitudinal benches that are part of the structure.
You could replace them with transom knees and breasthooks.

thanks for the reply Jacques. I have knees ready to go I just haven't gotten to the install yet. Do you mean I can't leave the bench open? The drawings don't show any extra framing for the bench version. I did shift the c.o.g 6" by skinnying the bench to 12" wide and shifting to the edge of the frame instead of centerline. I thought by adding the middle bracing tied back to the keelson and doubling up the seat edge it would be stiff enough.

is the attached what we're talking about?

I'll be keeping an eye on this build. I've been wanting to see one of these with benches instead of deck. :D

hey Hogwild. You probably shouldn't go by me, I think I've made about every mistake you can. After putting knees in last night now I'm concerned that I didn't glass first due to the debate raging on another thread!
The epoxy and I are having a go.....I feel like the kid in the cartoons that starts with a piece of bubble gum and ends up all tangled up in it.

Don't get too hung up on that technical debate. Yes it matters, but for the most part, careful attention to fully coating your ply (edges and faces) and then making sure you have full sealing up of seams will be fine for the smaller boats. You won't be generating the kinds of enormous hull pressure the big boats do unless you way over power the d15.

That said, you should really follow the build plans unless you are really dang sure you know what the heck you are doing. If the plan say glass then install... do it that way. ;)

Just to add a little to this................
When you buy a set of plans you are not only getting the measurements to make a boat looking thing but also you get the designer's knowledge and experience. The materials and use of them are not just a guess or what looks good but are something a professional knows will do the intended job.
If you want to make changes to the plans ask the designer for his opinion. The other great thing you get here is advice from lots of people with a huge amount of experience. No matter what if there is a debate on how to do something and the designer weighs in I would go with what he says. In the case of do you glass before or after installing the stringers JM has said glass the total bottom before installing the stringers so that ends the debate as far as I am concerned.

I always like a good challenge. And I'm making some "now I know" parts for my LIl Bit. I jsut may see if I can't prove fuzzy wrong in the course of events.

For the record, I've known to really find new ways to screw things up. I'm a pro at it.

look at this crazy stuff. The marine foam didn't expand as much as a figured on, (low temp maybe?) so I planned on capping it off with commercial foam similar to Great Stuf to fill the box. I ended up having to put 50 lbs on each one to hold it down(!) and they stiff walked on me. Came out the next morning to find this 2' high volcano :o

Don't know what you used, but I've been told Great Stuff isn't closed cell foam and shouldn't be used on a boat.

That is one crazy looking volcano, not sure how that happened!

hey pee-wee
I've read those posts about Great Stuf too. This product said it's water-proof and 4 x denser. It hardened up pretty well. Theres a full 2 qts of marine foam underneath, I just needed something to fill the top void. The expansion pressure caught me by surprise, it knocked my cubbies all out of wack.

Hello All, greetings from Alabama!
The "Peg Leg" is nearing completion. After many hours fairing the bottom, I blew it all by messing up the steel-flex super-slick 2000 bottom epoxy. That stuff is impossible. It should be bullet-proof after 4 coats, but man is it ugly. Good thing its on the bottom of the boat :D . another couple coats of 2 part primer/sealer and then the blue.
Trailer is in the driveway waiting for the flip!

good morning All.
I stumbled back on this site thinking about building a houseboat, and wanted to update on my modified D15 build from 2018. The Peg Leg
It turned out great! We've used it tons, and always get comments at the ramp.
It's solid as a rock and the ride is way better than I was expecting, especially in a chop, even with the mods I made. It's a tad squirrely at full speed with a 25 yammie and a guy sitting in the bow seat, but not excessively so. With just 1 guy it tops 30mph, high 20's with 2 fellas. It's mostly dry depending on wind direction, but I wish I had extended the spray rails full length. I have added a bow mounted trolling motor and depth finder. I'm very pleased with the outcome.
Cheers!
Ken
