I think white oak would be fine. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

I just sent them the sail plan (Jacques' Chinese lug-the one in the AD16 plans) and asked for a quote. Thanks again.

Let us know. It's been a few years, but they helped me with some storm sails and two cruising spinnakers. Plus I bought some old sails just to use as wrapping paper for Christmas gifts!! So cool..

Back in 1990, I had bought a little (non racing) daysailor called a Sunbird, Atlantic had bought all the sail kits when the company went out of business. I bought a brand new sail kit for $ 100!

White oak is great for structural use, quite strong, but not so great for getting an exterior finish to stay bonded, as it moves so much with moisture changes.

Hi,
I was also cheap and made my push pits out of 2 fibreglass and one carbon sleeve over a foam mandrel and when I had them finished they did not look so nice so I ordered stainless steel ones for the same money.

My push pits in the making

Now with carbon

Finished they were strong and light and ready to be screwed through the deck benches reinforced with one inch wooden cleats underneath

and then I ordered and mounted these from Italy

and I am happy because they look so much better and not like my home brew

Go for stainless steel push pits you will not regretit

Karl, that's funny, I thought someone else had done this but I couldn't recall where to find it. Thanks for re-posting!

I made my tiller out of white oak and mahogany a few years back and it still looks fine; but I have a cover for it. You should cover all brightwork if you can as varnish will only last a year outside, if that. That's why I mentioned brightwork at the beginning of this string.

In regard to laminated okoume, that ought to work fine, but the same thing applies.
