What do you guys recommend for a good general purpose fairing compound? I'm trying to avoid Quickfair because it'a too expensive.
Thanks

fairing material question?
Re: fairing material question?
BBC has a mix that is micro ballons, silica? It’s easier to work than the wood flour. I got by without Quick Fair so far. Wood flour is the least expensive but is a harder material to sand etc after it is cured

Re: fairing material question?
Folks love Quick Fair and I did use some on my build but I've always just made my own from microballoons, and when called for, cabosil and/or milled glass.

Re: fairing material question?
Many builders do the rough fairing with a mix of resin, micro balloons and silica and finish with QuickFair.

That what I'm doing on the LM18. You get the weave filled in and a lot of the low spots, cheaply. QuickFair is what I use for finishing, then S3 Yacht Primer.

Well that settles it. Thank you!
Re: fairing material question?
You may know this already...
sift micro balloons and silica and wood flour mix (mix A)
mix the resin/hardener (I use the slow hardener) (mix B)
mix the two well (mix A and B)
pour out on a cookie sheet (doesn't go off as quick)
There are other ways of doing this, but this does work

Re: fairing material question?
Do not use wood flour in a fairing mix, it makes it hard to sand. You can buy a premixed fairing mix from here consisting of balloons and silica or mix your own of one part silica, one part balloons and one part epoxy. I think that is the right mix but check with Reid.

I did mix wood flour with the the fairing mix from BBC. Used a long straight edge to level the mix. A few hours later I used a long board with 40. It filled in the weave of the cloth. If I had waited a few days, It would have been hard as a rock. You don't leave clumps and runs, level them now, wipe the run off.
First time was bad! It's gets easy after that. The guys on this forum told me to add to the wood flour and not use wood flour by it's self.
