PC24 Engine placement

We are building a PC24 (first ever boat build!) and have just completed the two hulls. We will power the boat with two 30 HP two-stroke engines. I know the plan specifies an engine pod but I was wondering if it is possible or advisable (or indeed ill-advised) to place the engines on the transoms. Kinda like the Skoota. What are people's thoughts? Thanks in advance!

The designer is the one that will have to weigh in on whether that will work. Hopefully Jeff, Reid or JM will see this and either be able to answer it or get it to the right designer.

Is that not included in the plans? I remember designing a twin engine installation.

OK, I checked. I designed a twin engine version for the EC24, not the PC24.

If you put the engines on the hull transoms, we may have to move the cross beam E.
Ho did you build your hulls? With the straight or rounded transom?
I will have to draw something but can you post a picture of your hulls? I want to see at which stage you are.
Also, what's the shaft length of your outboards? 20" is best but if you already cut the rounded ends of the hulls, we may have to add a knee.

I will wait for your reply about the hulls but don't put any frames in the hull at this point. If you want the outboards on the hull, I will specify some extra glass in the hulls.

Thanks for the prompt reply. The hulls already have frames. No step on transom.

Good, it can be done at that stage.
What is the shaft length? 20"? Metric is OK.

Looking at the plans, I see a couple of changes that must be done:
- reinforcements to take the engine thrust and other loads. That's easy.
- transom dimensions: we must cut it down and add a clamping board
- transom angle. The transom is vertical but the outboard needs a clamp at about 13 degrees. We can cut a slice or use it as it is with a bracket.
Are brackets easily available in your country? Could them be made?

There is no way that last vertical frame being called a transom in the picture is 20".

It is somewhere around 24-28"?

Wouldn't it be easier to add a piece of hull on at this point?

They need about 6" or 7" for a drop in a motorwell. Nothing appears glassed yet.

It looks to me like they could extend the hull using a modified curved step option and instead of making the steps, they would make the transom and run the motorwell up to the frame they show. Then they would be missing one step riser is all. They would put an incline on the motorwell for drainage. The sides could still be curved.

I could be wrong, but it looks possible to me with the right scantlings.

I'll go to my corner now.

Just so the builder knows this, I built a model of the Skoota hulls and my model didn't have the transom and I realized I didn't have the right drawings from Richard at that moment.

The engine shaft length is 508mm. Yes I believe we can get brackets if needed.

That's a 20" shaft in the US, good.
Yes to the brackets, that is the easiest and strongest way to handle this.
I will sketch some transom knees and a clamping board. Give me a couple of days.

Any luck with these yet Jacques?

Also, I guess we'll still need to build the engine pod? Does it play any part in holding the boat together?
