C12 Mast

Post by 94'325is »

Getting closer to needing a mast for my boat, if nothing else to make sure the rake and location are to print. I'm debating between an aluminum from somewhere like Dywer or making my own. It seems like the aluminum would be easier in the 20' length called out on the plans but more expensive, especially when shipping is considered. Also I'd like to have a 2 piece since the boat will be trailered.

Any thoughts on Aluminum vs wood for a 20' un-stayed mast?

P.S.
I am checking craigslist somewhat often but so far you have to take the boat with you and that's what I want to avoid.

I just bought the C12 plans and the mast is also my biggest concern. This will be a budget build and if I remember correctly, I have seen a post where Jacques stated a wooden square mast would work fine. Not to hijack your thread but would a square mast glued up out of 1x3 spruce with rounded corners work?
