scaled up OD18?

Post by davesavage3363 »

I just read through a post from OldE about a scaled up OD18. Does anyone know if he ever built the boat. I ask because I would love to, but I would need someone to scale the plans up for me. I am good at following instructions, but don't trust myself to be the one to write them.

Better to ask in the “before building” section, lots of scaling and adjusting topics there.

Scaling is straight forward if you buy the metric plans, but having built an OD 18 and an SC16 from Jaques' plans, the other thing you get from here is a lofting plan for getting the most from a standard sheet of plywood. A 10% increase may be easy to calculate, but laying it out is going to be the challenge and expense. What do you need from a boat that makes you want a bigger OD?

I’ve built an OD 18 and a C19. My opinion is that unless there is something you love about the OD you would save a lot of hassle by building one of the bigger plans from scratch. Any gains from the fact that the OD is a relatively simple build will be lost by having to scale and waste materials. Also - nothing against the OD but frankly I have never liked the flat bottom. Why don’t you look at a Panga 22 or FS19 instead.

We are talking boats, right? Got nothing against flat bottoms of any kind though....
My already completed 'Lil Bit'. A Martens Goosen V12 set up to sail me to the fishing holes.

Definitely talking boats here! I prefer a bit more of a rounded bottom myself - helps cushion the pounding!
