Panga 22 or Novi 23

Post by Chessie »

I am hoping in the next year or so to be able to begin on what has been a very long dream, to build my own boat. My focus on models has changed somewhat over the years and still find myself flip flopping, but I do believe these two are the short list.

I live not far from the Chesapeake and spend most of my boating time on it or her tributaries.

Of these two models:

Which one provides the better planing hull?
Which one will handle the common 2’ short chop of these waters better?
Can the Novi hull be built in the open style of a CC, but with the console side mounted towards the stern?

A primary need for this boat is running a trotline for crabs as a one man operation, something I’ve done for years.

I want something that can run 30-35 MPH when dead calm, but also be able to maintain some degree of comfort if it gets snotty.

I love the lines and the efficiency of the Panga, but like the width of the Novi. Not big on the cost and labor difference though.

Any thoughts or guidance are much appreciated!

My brother is really enjoying using his FS 19 all over the bay. But a boat that I think would fit your requirements well would be the new Tina 21 design. It reminds me of the bay style crab boats that I grew up with.

Novi for sure.

Ppi @ 560 vs 420 for the panga. It is basically a 25% larger boat for the extra foot.

Panga 25 at 510 ppi would be much closer to the same size. Might want to look at the GP 21 also ppi 578

the Panga would outperform almost any other boat as far as running into a chop. That is what it was designed for. Obviously the NV23 is a larger boat. The Panga is built heavier than other boats of the same size, but there is nothing stopping you beefing up the NV23 into a workboat.

Thanks.

Browndog, can’t find a Tina 21, anywhere.

Sounds as though the Panga may be preferred over the Novi for choppier waters, especially at any type of speed. I don’t want to have to plow/ crawl through them but not bouncing off the tops either.

It is certainly the cheaper and the more efficient option.

Looking at Panga Ron’s 25, is nothing short of a beautiful boat.

There is no engine box and that frees the middle of the cockpit but we loose some room to the splahswell.
The splashwell looks large because it is designed for max. 250 HP, the length is an industry standard. If we make it shorter, some engines will not be able to tilt all the way up.
It does not have the skeg of the inboard but if it was my boat, I would have a small skeg about 1" square. I"ll show it on the plans.
The side console is part of the character of the boat.
I should show some fishing chairs in that cockpit.

The hull lines are within 1/2" of the original. It has some tumblehome in the sides at the stern but the boat can also be built with straight sides there.
The small posts supporting the end of the roof are optional. They don't exist on the original boat but, if we have a handrail along the rear edge of the roof, it could break when jumping a wave with two big guys hanging on there. We could use carbon and forget about the posts but that's not the style of the boat.
Here is some info on the New Tina Design
