C19 vs CX19

Post by SDyeti »

Hello all, I've been of two minds about what to build and have bought both the C19 and CX19 plans. I like the idea of a cabin and a windshield for my wife and the general "comfort" but the reality is that this will be a fishing boat 90% of the time. Just not sure that the cockpit space between the C frame and E frame is really enough are to work in when you throw in chairs and a 25-30 gallon bait tank.

The compromise in mind is to basically do a CX hull without the cabin and interior seating and then add those later if wanted. To do this I would move the D frame back to around the 165" mark (about 13" back). This would allow the fuel tank to fit in between C and D. Leave the B frame as a CX frame land build the casting deck off of it lowering the casting deck 6". The previously mentioned bait tank would site somewhere over the D frame with the idea to leave me at least 24" between the bait tank and the E frame.

A couple of other differences I've seen between the two plans. Motor well and sole on the C19 is 9mm vs 12mm on the CX19. And the deck is 9mm on the C19 and 6mm on the CX. Can I go with 9mm motor well and sole and 6mm deck?

Why not build the Cabin to plans and then attach with bolts rather than glue. You could install it for family trips.

Just a thought

Sometimes the nesting is what dictates the thickness used. Jacques does a good job of using the least amount of plywood by his nesting arrangement. You might find that is the reason for the thickness difference.

The C19 and the CX19 are exactly the same hull. You can move bulkheads and frames a little bit, the max. span between them has to be less than 36". If you wan to modify the inside cut of a bulkhead or frame, you must keep at least 3" all around. The framing is the boat's skeleton, you need it.

Where are you going to use the boat as that will dictate whether the cabin version or the C19 is the better choice. For me in a warm climate the cabin version would just be hot and stuffy - but now that I have a young family the idea of a canvas dodger on the front like one of these is very appealing... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=n5jtYEmxm44

Will also depend on the kind of fishing you do. And whether you leave your gear on the boat or take it on and off.

Basically the hulls are the same. You might as well build the hull and then decide on the layout you want once you can stand inside it and get a feel for it.

The C19 has a lot of space - but it is a wide boat. As a Center Console, I had to be quite careful to fit everything I wanted lengthways into it. Width wise there is a lot of room. I would make the motorwell as efficient as possible as it eats up a lot of rear space.

I appreciate all the comments and since this will basically just be a fishing boat for me I'll probably just stick with the C19 as designed.

While the hulls are the same shape. The internals for both are a little different. Its really not just as easy as put the hull together and then figure out the rest. The C and D bulkheads and the gas tanks are in different places on the two designs. The E bulkhead is also a wee bit different on the CX to accommodate the fuel tank.

The CX totally seems a little more "family friendly" but we don't have kids and my wife's motion sickness issues lead her to not spending that much time on my boats in the past. So a true C19 it will most likely be.

Moving bulkheads around here and there is no big deal as far as I can make out! Even after you flip the boat and put in the stringers and frames, there is no major issue moving the central bulkheads backwards or forwards a little to accommodate your fuel tanks so long as you stick with Jacques guidelines. Many people move all sorts of bits around and he always keeps a watchful eye over it. I don’t know where you are - but I find a center console to be much more seasick people friendly because of the breeze!

Also a center console puts you closest to the center of the boat where you experience the least motion. It helps to be able to see the horizon; the mind and body deal with it better than if you get in a cabin, where motion is not connected to what the eye sees.

A new contender has entered the ring!

Went ahead and picked up plans for the P21 as well. Wife says she likes it better than the other two options. I've always liked what I've seen of them as well. I've definitely spent more than a few hours checking out the builds from fastlane and copro. Definitely seems like a lot more boat than the other two. More complexity and more costs as well.

Still very much in the process of deciding I suppose.

If your wife likes the P21 it is a no brainer... 1) you can never have a big enough boat and 2) happy wife = happy life :) :)

Have you considered the Novi 23? Not much difference in materials or build time. You will get a slightly longer hull which gives you more cockpit space at the back and she will run a little more efficiently than a P21 through slow to moderate speeds... and you can power with a smaller motor?
