CCTXF20

Stringers are cut and aligned in the molds on top of a rolling strong back. Hoping to get the bottom panel cut, glued and on top of the jig this week.

I added 2 1/2” to the stringers to raise the sole well above the DWL. Self bailing and raw water wash down are a must for the way I will be using the boat. Primarily wade fishing the Upper and Lower Laguna Madre systems.

Thank you Jeff and Reid for your help and attention to detail with my plywood order. Thank you Jacques for the design, we met several years ago in Port Aransas at the plywooden boat festival. Somewhere I was a picture of you and I with my Indian River Skiff - “Forever Young” Thank you to all the builders in the forums for the support, advice and experiences.

Have a blessed Easter.

Just loading up pictures for now. I’ll edit the post with explanations and possibly rotating the images.

Stitched the side panels to the bottom panel and rolling back into the garage for the evening.

Interior of the transom sanded before stitching in.

Learned a big lesson from my first build. Round the edge of the clamp board lamination, fillet and glassed with 12oz biax tape prior to installation. A pain to do upside down on your back after it’s installed.

Quarter round trim molding cut in 3/4” sections work wonderful under the zip tie stitch to maintain a proper gap. 1/2” pvc is just to large and unruly trying to establish a nice consistent glue gap.

Tool of the week. A pull saw! Perfect for easily trimming the small “humps” in my skill saw cut and making for a consistent seam gap in the chine.

Side panels place on the jig for the first time. If this won’t get you addicted, then sanding and fairing definitely will not.
BBD9F1C7-3028-45BB-9B47-0DCF45F20713.jpeg
Drilling holes through the pieces to be laminated and using dowels for alignment is the only way to go! I did this with the stringers as well.
3FC4D23F-7266-41A4-B81B-C708EB660CC6.jpeg
Worked the transom and clamp board transition all wet on wet prior to installation.

Side panels about to be spliced together. Only 12oz biax tape. Wet out the Okume edges with neat epoxy while leaving a 3/8” gap between the seems. Follow up with wood flour thickened epoxy and push everything together making sure the thickened epoxy squeezes out from the seems. Wet out out the biax tape with neat epoxy over the seem. This seems just as strong if not stronger than wooden butt blocks and less fairing as the butt block left a small flat area on my first build, that needed to be faired out with additional quick fair. Another lesson learned.

Side panel plotting and drawing of chine and shear lines.

That’s 24’ of beautiful Okume!

No wooden butt blocks in the bottom panel either. Turned out super strong. I was worried about having to trying to put a temporary frame to lift and flip the panel onto the jig along with help. Nope I was able to just lift, flip and lay over the assembled bottom panel over the jig myself. Never made a sound. The panel is very solid AND I won’t be dealing with trying to get 1708 to lay down around butt blocks.

Plywood and lumber cart, Not much shop space. Everything has to be organized and on rollers.

Plotting out bottom panels.

4 stringers clamped together and shaped. I added 2 1/2” to make the boat self bailing.

I love the plywood storage, I may need to copy that. Also, that grill looks like it would make a great epoxy mixing station!
There are only two seasons in Vermont: boating season, and boat-building season.
