Pick a boat to match the motor.

Post by Catfishtoon »

I just got a early birthday present from my father. This 1957 Johnson 7.5hp was bought new by my uncle. I got it in the late 80s for a few years. When i left for Basic Training it went to a different uncle and then to a distant cousin. Dad found it and gave it back to me.

Im looking at designes to fit the motor. Something that would look maybe kinds period correct? I have ideas but im wanting your choice.

Thanks in advance.

The Flat Skiff 14 would be perfect for that motor, and has the look your going for (I think).

Having just redone a 1960 2hp British Seagull I'm digging that old Johnson!

How fast you want to go?
It is a little undersized for the rb12 but I think would look really cool,

it says it will plane on 10hp so..... but I still think the looks work well together and puttering around for show and Sunday afternoon picnics you don't need speed......

I'll second this, and add a note to make sure that at least some of the boat is finished with wood brightwork, not all painted.

Edit: if you wanted to get crazy, that engine could also look pretty sweet pushing around an HMD19.

If that motor uses a pressurized tank setup and you're going to build a boat around it, also look into a mod you can do that eliminates the pressurized tank, much safer. Looks like great project, I love seeing older stuff get a new lease on life!

While the rb12 is a gem, and there are a couple built here that are gorgeous, it would be hard to modify it for a manual start tiller engine. Agree 100% on whatever boat, it includes as much bright wood as possible.

A pressurized gas tank is new to me. Does that engine use one?

The first boat I built was built around an engine I had (fairly new 40 hp Yamaha and I put an OD18 on it).
Go for it, and start a build thread. You'll get lots of comments here, most of them helpful. 8)

In the photo of the tank you can make out a few clues: twin hose, stout cap, pressure thumb pump like on a Coleman stove. I had a 58 evinrude 35 with the same setup, not uncommon for leaks to develop and mist or even squirt gas.

Those tanks are fine as long as maintained.

Rather than match the boat to a motor, what do you want in a boat? Fishing? Drivin around?

Thanks everyone. Keep it coming.

I have a fishing boat. I have plans for a plain jane fs17 as a bigger boat.

This boat would be 90% advertising for my wifes antique store. May get wet a couple times a year? Maybe let the grandkids tool around at family camping trips.

Cowbro.... why..... why..... i cant get the hmd19 out of my brain. Except i want the planing version with a 50 on it. Why.... lol.

I also think it would look great ok an rb12 but may be frustratingly slow.
