Don't cut out the transom please until consulting with people.

A lot of guys take a recip saw to them and it is a grotesque error.

The best way to do a transom repair is from the inside of the boat, leaving the external skin intact.

...enough said for now

Thank you Cape Man,
Understood, I'll start with the tower, helm, engines, and fuel cell. That should make way for cleaning the bilge in order to evaluate major glassed wood structures.

JDP, just as a note, take clear close-up photographs of everything you demo including measurements/thickness of manufacturer products as this will assist you when you start the rebuild. We advise to replace with as close to the same material/thickness as producer as possible. Jeff

Thank you Fallguy1000,

I will definitely take it slow and easy. I was just thinking about what the least invasive way is to check the wood? The tap test does not seem too reliable to me. I guess just start removing things screwed/bolted to and through the boat and look for rot. maybe do small core samples (not all the way through. just the glass to see the wood) in suspicious areas?

Is that where the boat will live for the project? And are you planning on leaving it on the trailer? As soon as you have the boat where it will be, trailer or not, I would build a good set of steps. You are going to be crawling in and out a million times so make it as easy and safe as you can right from the start.

You have the right idea in that while stripping the boat you will get a good feel for rot or not. And if you think you need to bore a hole to look at the core not big deal, you will be doing lots of glassing so patching a hole is just a thing. I like to cut holes with a hole saw so I can get a good look at the plug.
