Robalo 2140 cabin floor repair

Post by gw204 »

The cabin floor on my '96 Robalo 2140 has been soft ever since I bought the boat a few years ago. Given that my refurbishment is still ongoing I figured I might as well go ahead and address this now.

I suspect the issue is due to the core becoming delaminated from top skin. So, I'm looking for a little advice on how to best tackle this project. I know one of the possible solutions is to drill a few exploratory holes and see if I could just get away with injecting epoxy to bond things back together, but I would like to be armed with a plan to remove the top skin if needed.

The floor is finished in diamond non-skid with a smooth perimeter about 1-1/2" wide all the way around that curves up where it meets the vertical surfaces. So there's probably only 1" of flat smooth surface before the non-skid starts. Should I need to cut the skin for removal, how far in from the edges should I make my cuts? Should I plan to have tabbing run up the transition to the sides, or move in far enough that I can keep it on the horizontal surfaces? If I am able to reuse the skin, what weight glass would guy all recommend I use to tab it in around the edges?

I take it you are hoping to remove the top skin and reuse it. I would make my cuts in flat smooth areas if possible. Even if that is a larger area than you think is needed. Open it up and keep posting. The guys will help all they can.

Personally, I'd use an oscillating tool and cut the entire floor top laminate out if it is pretty bad. But you are there and I am here.

The easiest way to fix is to cut the entire laminate, determine the extent of rot, recore if needed, tab back to the sole coaming. Sand. Use traction paint to cover the tabs and repair.

Start off by tap testing. Loose skin will make a different sound.

Once you determine how bad it is; decide if you can cut the perimeter. Report back.

Approximate cut line if the sole is really bad.

Tapped the area yesterday and it sounds like just about all of it has to come out. :( Drew a cut line at the edge of the molded nonskid since there's not enough flat area to stay out of it. Gave up after that cause it was super hot in the cabin with the boat tarped...and I had to cut the grass. Will post more once I get to cutting. Thanks.
