That's a "shaft tree"!
There are only two seasons in Vermont: boating season, and boat-building season.

Completed Paul Butler 14' Clark Fork Drifter
Completed Jacques Mertens FS14LS + 10%, Build Thread
Started Iain Oughtred Tammie Norrie

Hopefully more like a lodge pole pine than an oak tree

Just curious. Why not build a shaft log by glasssing around a pvc pipe then leaving it there?
Currently building Jacques Mertens ST21 "Skinnydip". Boating adventures: Splash testing and using 'Skinnydip, as a basis of further building refinement; Adams 44’ sailing sloop "Great Sandy" (cruising and maintaining); Iain Oughtred Feather Pram "Mini Dip" (building); Jacques Mertens R13 "Wood Duck" (built and due for maintenance).

That is a very good question. My problem was size. I am using a 2 inch shaft. The stuffing box is 3 inch ID. So I needed something that was bigger than two inch plus some a little clearance room. The closest I could come up with was 2 inch electrical that was 2 3/8 od. By the time I wrapped the pipe I was close to 2.5 inch. That let me have a 1/4 inch glass wall and be at 3 inch od. I would have loved to have found the right tube to have been able to leave it in there. The boat had a 1.5 inch shaft and all they did was install a piece of 2 inch pvc and then pore concrete around it.
The root cause of all this and why I removed the old shaft log is the angle was so flat it forced the engine to be way too far forward. That worked for a work boat but not so good for a play boat.

Been a while since my last post. I ended up doing the one thing I did not want to do and that is cut out the old main stringers. They were too narrow for the new engine. Cutting them out of this old girl was no fun at all.

I know I have talked about Zec grinding disks before but they are worth mentioning again. All I can say is if you want to really move some glass they are the answer! Compared to them your usual 40 grit flap disk is like hand sanding. Another handy thing for cutting glass is a thin cut off disk on a grinder. Does not work on wood but they will run right through straight glass. Needless to say a full face respirator is a must. You will look like Frosty when you use either one.
