CS23 Build: Open Deck / Closed Transom

Hi all.

I'm just about to start my CS23 build. Have had the plans for about two weeks now and think I have a good enough understanding to make a start.

I've 3D modelled the molds and frames and everything seems to be lining up. This gives me the confidence to move on.

Image

Next step, starting on the molds :D

I'll keep you posted....

Sweet! These are awesome looking boats, I can't wait to follow along. Do you have plans for the OB?

Sorry what do you mean by OB?

Congrats on your choice the CS23 is a great boat. I remember one builder in New England here in the States building 3 for his sports fishing business several years ago. I assume you are going to hang the motor on a platform as one of the photos in the study plans show, with the closed transom. I will keep watching through your landing the first fish. A tuna?

One last thing I would not try to build your own motor bracket. I found a couple of Australian companies for other builders down there that do build them. They are not just a square box to hang a motor off the end of the boat and must take all the torque of the motor plus the pressure of the sea states on it.

Don't worry, not planning to :)

Could you pass on the details of the companies you found? Especially anything in WA.

Ah. Not too sure just yet. Would be happy to hear anyone's experiences or recommendation.

I've got a Honda 90hp, 4 stroke on my current 17ft but it is a little slow out of the hole. Other than that, it's been quite reliable.

Reagan Tom here. finally had a chance to go through and find the bracket or as I learned pod builders in Australia. So here we go.

http://www.dolphinaluminium.com.au/services.html They also build custom gas tanks. Check with the others also, though gas tanks are a different breed.
https://www.boatpods.com.au/

https://www.ozseaplateboats.com.au/pods

https://www.ozseaplateboats.com.au/pods

https://wakemakermarine.com.au/boat-pods/

https://www.banistermarine.com.au/contact/

At least a couple of these are in WA I do not know about the rest as I am not familiar with your postal codes. Keep on sending the pictures, love them.

One last thing, you mentioned putting your 90 HP motor on this boat. I ran some motors through my speed calculator, the 90 would give you a top speed in the low 30's. a 115 in the mid 30's and a 150 in the high 30's very low 40's.

Thanks heaps for the info Tom.

No, not planning on using the 90 (other than to help finance the new OB through the sale of it) :D

Your welcome. Didn't take long at all. One last thing I am the prop guy here on the Forum so when you decide on the motor you want I can come up with tye final top speed for your boat weight as it leaves the dock and the prop it should have. I just used 2700lbs guestimate for the above speeds on the previous calculations I made. Also I assume you are going offshore I would recommend a 4-blade prop. Let me know when you get closer to finishing.

Regards, Tom

All panels on and aligned, ready for gluing.

Image

Image

I found tile leveling wedges really good for aligning the panels.

Image

Image

I added an extra slice on the upper side panel to try and eliminate the "droopy bow" that I've read about on these forums.

Unfortunately the camera stopped working so no images of aligning all the panels or doing the gluing.

You have a bang-up job on the hull, will make fairing easier. As a hint if you have not seen it before, get under the boat and tape all the seams before you start gluing them on the outside.

Great job! What are those little red wedges? They look like they help align the panels and give a proper gap all at the same time.

They are tile leveling wedges (DTA tile lippage system).

As you say, they align the panels to the same plane and create a 1mm gap between panels.

Not sure if that 1mm is an issue but for me seems worth the trade off.

And sanded them all ready to lay the large sheets.

No xtra tape on transom to hull bottom? I suppose that would reduce the chance for hook.

And a timelapse of the whole shebang. Unfortunately my camera seems to be having issues with it's autofocus, so a few frames are a bit blurry.

Make sure those helpers get something nice. Hard, dirty clothes destroying work. But wise of you to get help. Awful lot to tackle alone.

Work looks good from a distance.

You are one lucky fellow to have a glassing crew like that :!: That had to have made the whole job a lot nicer.
Did you have one person whose sole job was mixing epoxy?

Pretty much.

My sister was mixing around 300g each batch for us all, and in between batches getting on with a roller :)

Very grateful for the help.

Been sanding and fairing, sanding and fairing, and did I mention, sanding and fairing?

Looking at photos of someone sanding and fairing is probably only marginally more exciting than the actual sanding and fairing so I haven't bothered with a whole lot of photos.

I did sneak in a quick winter trip up north though:

And what would a boat build be without the addition of a new family member:

Fallguy , where you will be fishing the Game Warden will not count that as a Spanish . You will have King , Cero , and Spanish mackerel to fish for , a small spring king may look like a spanish if you don't know the difference . So when the game warden say,s it looks like a spring king and is too small or you are above your limit , you say spanish , or you say it is not a king or spanish and throw out the old I caught a Cero mackerel story and say there are no limits on those sir .

I wish our Spanish got that big . Our Atlantic Spanish are more or less like your Spotted Spanish , your Narrowed Barred Spanish are in the same size range as our King Mackerel , nice fish .
