Good evening everyone,
Thought I’d start a build thread for my first boat build ever taken on as a Covid lockdown project. I’ve always wanted a micro skiff style boat to fly fish the skinny water on so why not build one? Here’s the progress over the last 3 weeks or so, it’s coming along nicely. I’ve laminated the transom to the sub frame and increased the thickness to 30mm before glass as I’m hoping to put a 20hp on there. I will possibly build a bigger boat in the future plus the 15 is the same weight. I really want to avoid putting a 2stroke on the boat but will make a decision once I can float the hull and see how she sits with some weights thrown in the back (I’m also a featherweight so overloading won’t be an issue)….it’s a very addictive process as you all know, I’m thinking maybe an fs18 may be on the cards as the next project!
I’ve grabbed some Tasmanian oak for the rub rails, I’m looking at running underfloor fuel lines and electrics to a central grab rail with possibly some basic switches for nav lights. I’m really enjoying the build so far, can’t wait to see the finished project.

You're made of sterner stuff than I am :D I nearly fell out on a sharp turn on mine with only 5 horses. The tiller slipped out of my hand and I went into a tight 360 :roll: Couldn't reach the tiller, had'nt hooked up my kill switch. Felt a fool, but no harm and haven't forgotten the kill switch lately. 20 will be a rocket, but maybe also work on the future FS18?

Hi guy. Don't like you putting a 20HP on the SK14 st all. First the excess weight at the stern, It must be counter balanced by adding weight at the bow. The 20 weighs more than 40lbs more than the recommended 8HP so you need to add 40lbs forward of the Center of Gravity about 6'. Another thing since your speed will be much higher you will need to reinforce the bottom. Add a layer of 12oz biaxial cloth both inside and outside of the bottom. This will handle the 25-30mph speeds you can expect with the 20HP motor. Also make sure you add 120z biax to the transom.

The SD14 is a great boat as designed per the desgners specs, but when you go out of them things need to be changed.

Thanks for the info Tom, I’ve added extra glass inside already and doubled the thickness of the subframe to 12mm. I was thinking of restricting the 20hp output due to the exact point you’ve mentioned re speed, it would be dangerous, but I want it for the next boat….maybe I will stick with the smaller motor on this one and worry about future boat power later,

Some build updates, had a few days off from work so have managed to get a bit done. I’ve got most of the battens on the subframe in, cut the main part of the sole to shape, front hatch cutout and fittings applied and some reinforcement of the front deck applied. I’ve run out of epoxy thickening agent so I’m about to order more of that and some fairing agent, hopefully in the next week or so I can get everything ready for pouring foam. Soon it will be time for outside fairing and glass! Can’t wait

Got some more work done on the skiff, been waiting around for more supplies to arrive unfortunately. Got the outside glass on today, hopefully some fairing action to come soon. I just want her on the water, it’s going to be awesome.

Hey guys,

Got a little bit more work on the boat done. Knocked up a little skeg this morning and sharpened the chine at the rear about 1/3rd the length of the boat. How sharp do these need to be? Should I put a small radius on them to prevent dings or do you leave them really square and sharp for better control on the plane?
Been thinking a lot about power lately as well, especially what Tom mentioned, I reckon a little 4 stroke Suzuki or mercury 9.9 will be way more than enough power, it’s a fishing boat after all not a race boat! Thanks for the assistance guys,

Nice progress and a quality build. Which skinny water are you going to play in? :D
Currently building Jacques Mertens ST21 "Skinnydip". Boating adventures: Splash testing and using 'Skinnydip, as a basis of further building refinement; Adams 44’ sailing sloop "Great Sandy" (cruising and maintaining); Iain Oughtred Feather Pram "Mini Dip" (building); Jacques Mertens R13 "Wood Duck" (built and due for maintenance).

Thanks mate, I figured if I can get it to 70-80% of decent I’ll be happy with that as a first build. I’m in South Nowra on the NSW south coast so hoping there’s some good places around, thinking upper shoalhaven river for bass, currumbene creek and some stuff further south towards Batemans bay. It should be ok to use around Jervis bay on a good day. I wanted something a bit more than a kayak and a sup for some fly fishing, should be interesting to see how she goes. I’ve got a few weeks annual leave from work so hoping I can get some paint on it by December.
