Throttle and shift cable setup help

Post by fallguy1000 »

Not sure how to go about it...

The Skoota uses a Glendinning Smart Actuator 2 for throttle and shift.

The unit connections are 65" from the engine.

The last guy at GD told me I need a loop? But I have no room for a loop or should I see if I can get it to work and then make a loop in the rigging if not???

loop...hmph

I ordered 72" cables and gonna see if I can get them to work...but comments are welcome. I can't really setup the locker until I have the home for the actuator iced.

Also, the Glendinning has all these warnings wanting the engine to be running.

I'd like to setup the system this winter, but no way can I run the engines...

Any advice?

What is the "calibration " required?

i think the issue with needing the engine running is that you are moving the internal gearing and stuff with the controls, and if its not running the gears are going to get messed up. the controller is using electrical actuators to move mechanical parts, so the system needs to be in its final state otherwise how would the electrical part know it is functioning correctly.

its a pain to mess with water in the winter, but maybe some 55 gal barrels with rv antifreeze and electric bucket heaters to bring up to reasonable temp.

There is like a 3 page instruction list. I can call GD and ask of Calibration can be done without engines running. I am probably about 30 days away from being able to start the engines.

Right now my bigger issue is the cable lengths. GD told me I needed a loop..so I don't get too toght when steering. I had 42" rigging tubes, but I ordered 48" yesterday to make a bigger excess...

I'll add some pictures today for people.

Thinking about what I know "can be done" with these systems, my guess is that they have a two-stage engagement system that requires setting the point of "no contact" and "full engagement" of the lower castle gear. At the same time they need that to be linked to the throttle control INDEPENDENTLY of the actuator. I bet in those 3 pages there is something like "listen for" and then some sound description.

Otherwise, the need to run the engine doesn't make a lot of sense.

I figured you would have non-mechanical control linkages though. I'm surprised this isn't 100% wire based in motors that new.

Oh, believe me, I wish it was by wire and all the engine manufacturers are moving that way, but it starts at 150hp in the Yammies and that was too heavy..

If you were adjusting a fully mechanical cable system, would you not adjust in the situation you can shift it in and out of gear?

Rather obvious; herein lies the issue and why I asked for opinions on the 'loop'.
