If we're talking bia-ax cloth here, the smart play, which I also learned too late, is to sand those binder threads down before fairing.

Or wet/wet a last layer of light cloth.
I'll be learning to "practice what I preach" in the next couple days as I rebuild my chines and transom/hull junctions. The plan is 2 layers biax "on the wood" followed by 2 layers 10oz woven. I don't recommend the 10oz for "smooth finish" but for me it will still be nicer than sanding 6oz biax.
