Epoxy Prep Before Fairing Filler

Post by dbullmoose »

I glassed and epoxied the bottom of my boat last weekend with BBC’s Marinepoxy and I’m ready to go over it with West Systems 410 Microlight Fairing Filler (because I already have it) My question is: now that is been a week, what do I need to do to the epoxy/ fiberglass before adding the fairing filler?

No big areas of shine. Lotsa little shiny spots are fine, but big ones need 60 grit hit.

Sand entire hull with 60 grit. Take a picture..

Thank You Fallguy! I’m worried about sanding through my fiberglass! I’m trying to figure out how to post a picture

You do not need to grind the glass away. Just sand enough to knock the shine off and knock down any stitching.

Thanks you so much! I got it almost all sanded down. It wasn’t as delicate as it was in my head

Personally, I would have washed it down and used a scotchbrite pad to remove any potential blush, let dry, then sand. Then another wash to remove the epoxy dust and let dry again before using fairing compound.

Best thing to do is go over the glass with a loose mix of filled epoxy within a day. Fill the weave and then it’s easier to fair later. Something to consider for the rest of the glass jobs. It doesn’t need to be faring mix either, especially if you want to bond to the surface structurally later.
