NE FL FS18

Well, it’s game on, folks!
FS18, straight sheer, rounded chine.
Took me about a year and a half of forum stalking to finally pull the trigger. Was dead set on building the SK14, then I was double dang sure I wanted the FS14… yeah better 10% that sucker. Big thanks to Cameron and Jeff for talking me through some of the ins and outs of that boat. Then it happened. I put hands on SeaSlugs FS18. I think I knew I was going to build that boat but I just didn’t know I knew it yet. Crunched the material numbers for the FS14 +10% and they were really close to the FS18. Crap. That’s when it for real hit me. I’m going to have to build the 18 and I had better hurry up and buy the materials before I decide on a boat too big for the garage! Besides, Seaslug said I could blame it all on him. Done! Made the pilgrimage to BBC on 29 July and picked up just what is called for on the BOM knowing I’ll be back for more. A big thank you to Reid and Hannah for all the help, walk through of the shop and the boat talk. Y’all are awesome!
School has finally returned so the wife and kids are begrudgingly back to the grind and I get some time to get this thing started!
With plenty of family obligations I don’t anticipate this being a quick build but I’m good with that. Build plan is to keep things simple. Manual tilt and trim tiller 20hp. No console. Biggest splurge will be the diy hatches built like Seaslug and others have done. It will be fun to come back to this post later in the build and see how simple I really keep it.
Lastly I just want to give a mega thank you to Mike (Seaslug) for all the help and generosity! If you didn’t already know, he’s good people.

Posting on my phone so not really sure if the pic thing is going to work. I’ll get it sorted though.

Almost finished up the strongback today. Still need to add some cross bracing to stop it from racking. Hoping to get that finished and start the layout process next week. 16’L x 30”W x 23”H
I didn’t mention in my first post but this will be a father son build. My son is 10 and in serious need of some “get off the videos and get your hands dirty”. Some of my most fond memories of my father was our time in his wood shop building things. I’m hoping to do the same for my boy. Besides, he is begging me to build a boat and go fishing. Who am I to deny the kid a couple of life’s greatest pleasures. If I’m being honest, it’s some selfishness on my part spending time with him too.

Hey welcome to the fun. Making this a father son project is a great thing to do. Kids need to learn how to do things with their hands that does not include a phone. You may or may not know how lucky you are knowing Mike. Not only good people but one of the very best builders in a group of great builders. There is a reason BBC bought one of his builds to take to the boat shows.

Hey, Fuzz. I couldn’t agree more about getting our kids off the screens and doing something. I prefer working with my hands and being outdoors so that’s what he gets to do. :D

Believe me when I say the fact that Seaslug is right down the road and his willingness to help a newbie is NOT lost on me. I think I’m triple lucky to have my son with me, a wife that humors my compulsions and of course Mike.

Hey Mike, if you’re out there, I may not know how to build a boat yet but I do know how to wash them… and trucks. Just sayin.

Thanks John and Dave for the kind words. I haven't posted much for quite some time, but have not been idle. Refurbished a 7' dingy, finished Scott's Conchfish 16, and did a total rebuild of a shack I purchased 2 years ago. I'll eventually post some photos. John, get with me when you have time, possibly this weekend and we can talk more about your build. I fished Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning. 3 beautiful mornings in the marsh, with a handful of Red's and Snook landed. Got my first fish on fly, a small Snook, so may as well quit working now and start playing golf, followed up by regular visits with a shrink.

Looking forward to seeing progress. I found it helpful to create a schedule of sorts to basically hold myself accountable. Make it small, for instance, "i'm going to stitch the boat on Monday and Tuesday. Then Wednesday I'll start the filets, etc. Made my build finish pretty quick. Good luck!

Good call, wp. By day I’m a Production Planner so I should be able to work something out and you’re right, little bites are the key.

Same to you, Reid. Having your pup at the shop was icing on the cake for my son.

I hadn’t been on the forum in quite sometime. Decided to take a peak and nice to see another FS18 build about to get started. Reflecting back to my build, I laugh at my initial projections to complete my build. Like you and others who have conducted build projects, there’s full time work, family obligations, and other activities competing with boat build time. I started my build in May of 2013 and completed it in May of 2017. Needless to say I wasn’t in a hurry, but would have loved to have finished it sooner.

Like some others have stated here, set a schedule to follow. And, don’t hesitate to seek help. Looks like you’re already reaching out and you are certainly in great company here on the forum.

Looking forward to following your build!

Thanks , Mike M.

This is the 4th time trying to post but keep get kicked out every time I hit submit. Guess I’ll try again. I think if I hit preview more than once it has me sign back in when I submit, loosing everything I typed out. Will have to remember that.

Not too much progress. Got everything laid out and cut. Splices routed. Hoping to get some tape down and glue up the transom and stringers this weekend. We shall see. I’m really liking the trim router from Harbour Freight. Used the little surform to clean up all edges and knock down any high spots from the router.

Anyone here use the epoxy pumps from BBC? Do yours drip maybe 20-30 drips after pumping? Any thoughts on how to remedy the issue. Wastes a little but more a mess issue than a usage issue.

I used the Marinepoxy. I don’t recall having any issues with excessive dripping from the plunger pump. But I did place a cup under to catch any drips.

Marine epoxy here too. Prob with using a cup is the pump doesn’t quite reach beyond the jug so it just drops down the side of the jug. Just put a couple shop rags under the jugs for now.

Never could quite trust the pumps. I measure by volume in plastic cups and even tablespoon/teaspoon for very small mixes.

I tried the pumps and also didn't trust what they would pump out. I started using a food scale and weighing all my epoxy needs. Can even get close to what I need to mix wood flour in by weight. I go to the dollar store and pick up a pack of 2 clear, then "cutting board" sheets and cut the in half to keep the scale from getting drips on it. I use drinking cups that I weight the resin first, zero scale and then add hardener in the same cup. Need to multi-batches I can weigh a bunch of cups with just the resin, place on scale, zero it out and add hardener. Easier than doing one big batch and it kicks off before I finish.

When I had an assistant, I would get everything ready, resin cups weighed out. Clear everything off the worktable but the hardener bottle. When I called out for more, place cup on scale, pour right amount of hardener, mix and pour it in my rolling tray.

I also use the food scale for the two-part flotation foam, need equal weight of each parts so pour A X amount and pour B the same amount and mix.

Do the plans call for the splices to be routed? Seems to me that while it may save a little on fairing, it would create a weaker joint.

fallguy routing out where the tape goes does not weaken the joints as your only routing less than a 1/16", replaced by the fiberglass and epoxy. Several of the guys have done this before now. It just takes a little more time. Tom

Thanks for the tips, guys.
My intent with the pumps was for a clean and easy way to dispense to epoxy and not for accurate measurements. I have been pumping into measuring cups to verify accuracy. I will have to give the weight process some more thought as it doesn’t get much more accurate than that. Thanks for the breakdown, Orange! Although I will say the pumps have been spot one at one oz per pump.

It’s lining up to be a full weekend of family time so not much building this weekend. Need to get strings and transom glued, frames placed and then I can start putting the puzzle together.
Oh, and I’m over the heat. Ugh.

Be aware that if you decide to measure by weight, the resin is a little different from the hardener- if you want to be accurate you need to figure out what each weighs for a given volume and use that. Marine Epoxy is measured 2:1 by volume, not by weight. Each brand will have its own numbers; I'd get an accurate scale (inside a plastic bag) and see what you have.

I really prefer measuring epoxy by weight. For very large jobs like glassing the hull I would do it by volume for speed, in marked mixing cups that have the common ratios on the side. WARNING: confirm the markings on each new batch you get, I had one batch that was way off. I weigh water in the cup to confirm the markings of a few samples then trust the batch.

For smaller jobs and other epoxy products like fillet putty or fairing compound I find weight to be just as easy, more reliable, and you can easily do whatever size batch you want. A 1 or 2 KG digital scale using grams you can easily do exactly the ratio on the box or a multiple of it. If the ratio is 100:43 by weight then a small batch is add the cup, tare, add 10g resin, tare, add 4.3g hardener. A big batch is the same process but 200:86. For premix fairing compound you put cardboard on the scale and tare that instead of a cup.

I have always gone by volume using marked plastic cup red for resin, blue for hardener, then teaspoons/TBS for smaller amounts. Tom

Well, slow progress is still progress I guess. A lot of family/ kid sports and activities this time of year. Throw in a hurricane and time just flys by. I hope all of our Florida builders faired the storm ok and are doing well.

I have been able to get the remaining panels assembled and cleaned up. I’m going with the rounded chine so I took a little trim router with a 1/4” bit and cut my slits. I left several very thin tabs so the panels would be easier to move around. That worked really well and just took a sharp razor blade to knock off the tabs and release all the slats.
After the knees and stringers were installed I hung the transom and then hung all four panels. I started the stitching from the transom forward and made it up to where the rounded chine slats start.
I’ll dump some photos in the next couple posts. Please give my progress the eye ball test and let me know if you notice anything that I may have done wrong or could do better. Let me have it!! Thanks everyone!
Oh yeah, my wife wanted the laundry room redone so I threw together and few wall to wall floating shelves.

One last question photo for today. Throwing a level on the bottom I am dead flat from the transom forward about 25” before the panels start to fall off port and starboard leaving a high center. Sound about right?

Hey John. What you're describing is correct. The hull is dead flat at the transom, then a very slight V starts somewhere around 25 or 30 inches and increasing gradually going forward. Be sure and use the little pieces of pvc pipe while aligning and stitching together the bow, otherwise it will be very difficult to get it right. It may just be the photos, but the gap at the transom looks a bit excessive, and eighth inch is plenty. Also, from the photos it looks like the side panels and bottom panels don't come all the way back flush with the transom. Are you planning on filling the outside corners with thickened epoxy, then rounding over prior to glass? That will work. Good progress so far, good to see you well on your way. Mike

Howdy, Mike. I hope you faired well during the storm. Never even lost power up here. Blessed.

The gap on the transom I have now is about 1/4”. I’ll tighten it up a bit. I have the side and bottom panels even with the last of the three layers of the transom. So the transom sits about a 1/4” proud of the panels. My thought was to fill that with goop and round over. It would be easy enough to slide them back if you think it best.
For the stitches, I am using pvc pipe with a drywall screw screwed into it to act as my spacer. Once I get closer to the bow I will get small pvc or use pencils as Reid suggested.

Side note. Little internet birdie told me you got your self a new hull to play with. I’ll be eagerly waiting to see what you do with it.

Everything looks good from here, now that you've told me your plan. We want gaps everywhere, but 1/8 is plenty, any more just uses more filler and as you know it isn't cheap. We didn't lose power either but had a huge pine tree come down across my property, taking half an oak tree with it as well as a section of fence and my compost bin. It missed my Seapro by about 2". Feel free to call any time if you've got questions. Build on. Mike

Build on it is! Thanks, Mike.
Glad to hear you didn’t have too much damage. A compost bin and a fence are a lot easier to fix/replace than your Seapro! 2”, yikes!!

The rounded part of the rounded chine was not as round as I wanted so used a few oz of wood flour mix as a bondo to fill in some low spots.
C4D3E9B6-FB1A-4030-8449-0D1AB2F0762A.jpeg
Used these three to shape and round all edges. Fully cured glue was easily removed and shaped with these. If you plan on building a boat with epoxy, get these tools!!!

Lastly, did final shaping of bow and edges and gave the hull a full sand with 40 grit on the RO and then again with 60. All ready for glass.

Looks good, but you are going to want to hit it with the sander more. Those dark places that the sander hasn't hit yet are going to be dimples or air pockets once you lay the glass, then you have to fill them in then or sand through your glass/ both. You are going to want it very smooth right now BEFORE the glass goes down. It will be less work now.

Understood. Spot on, Orange. Thanks. None of the dark spots are more than about a 32nd low so shouldn’t be an issue. I’ll give it another go before glass.

Ok. Got the holiday rush out of the way and finally had the temps come up enough this weekend to get some glass work done.

I cleaned up the dimples as suggested by Orange and the laid the tape. I was planning to go wet on wet but chickened out last minute. Being my first time laying glass I just wasn’t willing to chance a big mess up.

Got started at 0600 today on getting the sheets cut down, epoxy pre measured and all the other little things together. Had some breakfast and got started on the mix, pour, spread treadmill. Finished up in about 4 hours. I ended up using about 10% more epoxy than some of the old timers like Cracker Larry. For a first time, I’ll take it!

Thanks, guys. There is definitely room for improvement on the next go around but I’m pleased for a first ever layup.
