DE25/LB26 Question for Jacques

Post by Jeff »

Hi, I studied DE25 and LB26 plans and have some questions:
1. Is it possible to use sandwitch method with wooden core instead of playwood (DE25) or foam (LB26)?
If yes, how thick the strips should be?. Is samba (obeche, abachi) - 380kg/m3 or fir - 500kg/m3 good alternative to foam?
( The thing is, availability of good quality playwood in my area is very poor and wood mutch cheaper then foam.)
2. Is it possible to make the cabin of LB26 significantly larger, like DE25 on my own risk?
Thank you,

Jeff

Response from Jacques:
1. The DE25 and LB26 are built as foam or plywood cored hulls. What you seem to think about is strip planking. The DE25 can not be built that way but the LB26 can be built from strip planking with heavy fiberglass skins. That method is included i the plans and I give specifications for it. Note that you must use quality cedar strips, epoxy resin and directional glass. Make certain all those materials are available.
2. You could extend the cabin and pilot house aft but the motor cover will be in the middle of that cabin. I don't see how to make that practical.
