Sk14 question

Post by bnt5 »

Considering the sk14 as an introduction to boat building, as I was researching I noticed that no one has added sponsons to the transom of the sk14. I was considering this addition to the plan to aid in aft flotation and possible increased stability?

Also since I am not located in a coastal region, most of my trips would be in rivers and creeks where rocks are a concern in shallow water. Is this hull somewhat impact resistant should I bump or scrape gravel/rocks where I fish?

Thanks, Bill in Ky

The added benefit probably isn't worth the added weight/effort/cost. Opinion of one.

What do you think it is solving if you do it?

You mentioned it as a beginner build, so why not go with the plans instead of adding complexity?

Rocks can scratch the finish, like on most any boat I guess, but the hull is rock solid. I built one according to the plans and it is a terrifically fun boat. Would be nice in rivers and I have used mine often in a lake, but no white water of course. My advice is to stick with the plans with minimal modification for a first build.
