Yoda's HMD18 progress

Post by Yoda »

A couple of new pics showing decking and the furniture. All sides of furniture are glued and taped. Ground the FG edges. Some fairing left on decks. Most of chase's are in. Deck fills, sink, sink drain and thru hulls are with UPS. Since rain is close I will finish everything I can before I have to move boat outside. Then I have to rig up a cover to protect the boat. All exposed epoxy will be primed.

Yoda,
Sterling looking work looks like you have vertically just about out grown your work space. Very nice work and great looking wood.

Thanks Scott, nice of you to say. But............. I'm a perfectionist that has no ability to be perfect. So I'm never happy with my results. I do think when the boat is finished I will have covered up enough so it will look fine, I hope ! :? :)

Looks great Yoda! Thanks for the pictures.
Foam just arrived but won't be able to get at the boat for a few more weeks.

I've got 6 gal of foam and I plan on using some foam board also, under the gunwhales. Should be lots.

Doug, Yoda:

I am considering building an HMD 18, also. But, it looks to me from the tutorial, and from the pictures of Yoda's boat, that the sole is fully tabbed down, with only a couple access hatches. What provision is there for dealing with a problem below the sole? About all I can think of is the Sawzall approach, followed by a resin and glass rebuild job over the problem area.

I'm think of what might have to be done if a hose comes undone, or a rock penetrates the hull somwehere down there.

The other approach might be to leave the sole untabbed, but gasketed around the perimeter, with some reversible method of securing the sole/floorboards to the tops of the plywood stringers. But, I imagine this might compromise the structural integrity of the design.

Any thoughts?

Thanks a heap.

Yes, the sole is glassed down, as it is on virtually all small powerboats in this size range. You can easily add an access hatch to get at fuel tanks etc. if you are worried about a hose coming loose. If you hit a rock, you can always fix it from the outside if you just puncture a hull panel.

No, it wouldn't be strong enough to have the sole just bolted down as you suggest. (Not to mention very very hard to make watertight)
