XF 20 builds .... how many splashed ....how many in progress

My XF20 is 99% complete. I'm working on restoring a 110hp Evinrude that will make this skiff fly. I decked her over, installed a sole and added frames and other major re-inforcements so she should handle the power without a twist.

I been wondering where all the XF20 builders have been. They been pretty quiet around here.

It would be good to see some progress reports and usage reports from the builders who have launched.

Not sure the designer intended her to have a 110 hp motor and a tower, but have fun, good luck and send pictures.

No tower planned and about the only thing that is "as designed" is the shape of the hull. Scantlings, framing and additional stringers were beefed up considerably. I worked closely with Stickystuff on the final layouts.

Added about 450 pounds to the original design plus the extra weight of motor and Detwiller jackplate. She should float in 3-4 inches.

Up in Jersey where I grew up there are smaller Garvey's with 250hp V8's running around in Barnaget Bay. Zoooooom !

I had some disagreement with Hunch about his modifications but after all, it's his boat, he does what he wants.
Sure that to take a 110 HP the hull needed some reinforcement . . . It's going to be a scary boat but I'm glad to see that launching is close.

A good XF20 is the one by SteveinSpringHill: it runs in 1-1/2" of water. His modifications was to use 1708 instead of 12 oz. bias on the bottom. Now that I see hwo some fo you use that boat, we may make it the standard lamination schedule.

Hey Hunch, nice to see you'r almost finished. I'm another Miami builder working on a GV11. Finished buiding, now to fair and paint. Maybe we should have a get together for the Miami builders.

Radical modifications were made for sure. I wanted the deck space of the XF20 to fish 4 big guys in comfort on a decked over boat and the ability to sleep two under a canvas dodger up front when the weathers right. The fore deck is 8.5 foot x 8 foot.

Draft was not a real priority. Cheapness and ease of buiding was number one, deck space second and draft 3rd. My best guess is she will float in 4 or less which is just about right for the Flamingo or Biscayne Bay areas.

That 110 hp wasn't my 1st choice but it showed up and was what I could afford. I doubt if I will ever really open the beast up unless I really need to or when I have the occasional whim to scare the crap outa myself.

I will get pics as soon as I get her out from under the back porch.

Hi guys,

Good to see I'm not the only XF20 builder who has dissappered for a while.

To refresh your memory, I'm building an XF20 in Bunbury, western Australia. I have raised the free board slightly, and also decked out the inside like a bass boat for tournament fishing.

Here's the latest pics, as I am just about ready to deck her. Don't mind that the transom is missing the "hump", I'm fitting permanent jacking brackets to offset the motor about 4 inches from the transom.

Any questions, please feel free to email me on: wdrew@compassford.com.au

Cheers

I enjoyed the Breammaster forum link. A good boat building demo. As a retired pro circuit bass fisherman here in the states the site was also interesting. Bream eh ? That's what we used to call little blue gill in the south. Thanks for the link. Glad to see you back.

Thanks guys...

Wait till Jacques reads this.. 8O 8O 8O

Can someone stand behind him as I'm sure he will faint...hehe

When it comes to a serious modification to the plans, I think I just stepped into the twilight zone. Have just flipped the hull back over to start work on a very mild v...

Working on a 10 degree entry, and a 6 degree deadrise on the transom, along with a delta / planing pad. The boat is going to end up with a 250 straight six INBOARD, and a hamilton jet... Weight increases by 150kg's, but is centred about 1/3 of the length from the transom, rather than hanging off the back. Draft will increase by an inch, but hopefully be offset by the extra flotation afforded by the mild v (which will be pumped with expanding foam for positive flotation.

I had to have the mild v to improve flow to the jet intake. It will also make the bottom stronger to accomodate the weight of the engine, and allow me to drop the engine height a little lower. I've had to beef up the back 1/3 of the hull stringers to support the new drivetrain, as well as lay some fairly meaty frames on the existing flat hull.

The v should make it a little more comfortable in a chop.

The cheapest option for an outboard was about AU$4000, whilst the inboard / jet configuration will only set me back about AU$1500. It will also give me around 120hp

Will try to paste as I go, and sorry Jaques for any heart palputations caused.

Warren..

Hi guys,

Back again after a little spell, with some progress on the modification of the XF20 hull.

I have flipped the hull and added a mild v underneath to provide a better flow of non aerated water to a hamilton jet intake.

Can't seem to insert a pic here  , so try my gallery as I have added them all in there now.

Any questions, or if you would like additional info on any of the pics please feel free to post here, or email me at:

wdrew@compassford.com.au

Thoughts and feedback would be appreciated...

Cheers

I see you're not a novice to boat building ...... very nice looking work. Of course it's now a XF20XVJ - but you are certainly on an adventure. Keep us posted!

P.S> The Hamilton Jet will be attached to what? Size, HP, Weight?

ON EDIT - Now that I've read page 1 - I see there are my answers. To quote Shine: 8O

Will do...

I am hoping to splash in late January. I have next years tournament series starting in March, and want to blow out any bugs before then.

Just updated some more pics of the XF20 modification. Feel free to have a look in my gallery, and drop me a line at the above email if you have any questions. I'm off to modify a trailer to carry it. Should be back in a couple of weeks with some more progress pics.

The Hamilton jet will be fitted to a Ford 250 crossflow, inline six. Cheap to buy, cheap to rebuild, and cheap to pick up marinisation parts.

I've just added some pics after fairing, adding strakes, and priming. They are in my gallery if anyone wants a peek.

Ken owens (stickystuff)has stayed busy on the xf20 that he is building for me....he completed the decking for the front casting deck. hatch openings, seat support and trolling motor support. He has done some excellent joinery work and the corner pieces he has milled for the trim and rub rails are outstanding. I varnished a piece of the wood last night and have finally color matched it to the sterling chart. the deck and hull colors have now been chosen and the paint is on order. Things are moving again. Parts are arriving every day and I am looking forward to begining the rigging of the boat in a month or so.

Remember, this is a highly customized boat. The original design does not have all that framing and is easier to build.
Like all other plans: you make your boat as simple or as elaborate as you want.
Ken does custom work and is comfortable with elaborate details but you don't have to build the XF20 that way.

I framed my XF20 front deck similar to Ken's work. Although my framework was simpler it was heavier and it added considerably to the cost and time it takes to build such a boat.

I could have built a standard xf20 in a third the time and it will still could do what my boat can do. Labor of love it was.

Ken is doing some absolutely beautiful work

Now if wwe can jut get him to take a break and do some fishun'
